Introduction

Use this guide to replace the Input Cover on your Framework laptop.

You'll only need a T5 bit screwdriver and a replacement Input Cover for this guide. Note: The Framework laptop comes with a screwdriver with a T5 bit and a spudger.

    • Shut down the laptop and unplug the power cable if it is plugged in.

    • The light around the fingerprint reader will turn off when the laptop has powered down.

    • Close the laptop lid and place it upside down.

    • Locate the five T5 bits underneath the laptop. Using a screwdriver with a T5 bit, unscrew the five screws on the bottom cover.

    • The laptop comes with a screwdriver with a T5 bit. This screwdriver will work for this guide.

    • These screws will remain attached to the bottom cover even when fully unscrewed. Do not attempt to remove them.

    • The screw on the bottom left will not unscrew as far. This screw lifts the input cover slightly.

    • This screw will make a clicking noise when it has been unscrewed far enough.

    • Flip the laptop over and open the lid.

    • Be careful while removing the input cover! It is still attached to the mainboard by the touchpad cable. This cable can be left attached for now.

    • The bottom right corner of the input cover should have lifted up to reveal a small gap which can be used to remove the input cover.

    • Carefully lift the input cover up from the bottom right corner using your finger or a pry tool. The input cover should be only held in place with magnets.

    • Avoid using excessive force which may damage the touchpad cable.

    • If the LED lights on the left and right sides of the case flash red after removing the cover, the system is still powered on. Ensure the laptop is powered off and is unplugged. Check that the LEDs have turned off before continuing.

    • Locate the large black cable on the right side connecting the touchpad to the mainboard.

    • On the mainboard side of the cable, there is a large loop with a orange spot. Insert your finger through the loop and pull up.

    • It is not recommended to remove the touchpad cable from the touchpad side unless the touchpad or touchpad cable is being replaced, as this side is more fragile.

    • There should be little resistance when removing the cable. Avoid excessive force which may damage the cable.

    • You can now safely remove the input cover from the laptop.

    • During reassembly:

    • Remember to connect the new touchpad cable to the mainboard before placing the new input cover on the laptop.
